Richard Todd wins screen actor of the year. Moira Shearer gets married. At London Zoo "Brumas" the baby polar bear is introduced to the world. The Royal family pose with new baby Princess Anne.



Sport - Reg Harris wins world cycle sprint title. Footballer of the year Joe Mercer leads his team Arsenal to victory. Mass channel swim is featured. The Derby is won by Galcador. Jockey was Rae W Johnstone. We also see young jockey Lester Piggott reading The Sporting Life newspaper.



Disasters - 80 Welsh rugby fans lose their lives in a plane crash. The wreckage of the Irish Mail train crash at Penmaenmawr is shown. The sinking of submarine HMS Truculent in the Thames Estuary. Knockshinnock Colliery, New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland - mining disaster.



Triumphs - Loch Sloy dam in Scotland. Brad One (Brad 1 ?) - biggest civil plane in the world visits London Airport. The Wilkes Brothers demonstrate the first turbo jet car. The DH Comet aircraft sets new standards in civil flying.



World Events - Berlin youth march. Belgium - riots following King Leopold's return to the throne.
