Piet Retief - History of South Africa

Pieter Mauritz Retief born in the Wagenmakersvallei, Cape Colony. His family were Boers of French Huguenot ancestry. Retief grew up on the ancestral vineyard Welvanpas, where he worked until the age of 27. Losses of cattle to invading Xhosa impelled many frontier farmers to become Voortrekkers (literally, "forward movers") and to migrate to new lands in the north. He joined a band of thirty wagons eventually ending up in Natalia where he negotiated a land settlement for the Boers with the Zulu leader Dingaan. Dingaan blindsided Retief and killed him and his whole party and further went on to decimate the Boer Laagers of his traveling companions. This was the precursor to the retaliation which culminated in the Battle of Blood River - an Intergral part of the History of South Africa.
