Swimming & diving the wreck of the S S Politician Isle of Eriskay

During our Barra based expedition, one of the highlights was to visit the remains of the whisky galore shipwreck SS Politician. The wreck site sits in a sandy bay between Eriskay and South Uist. We timed our visit with low water which enabled us to swim, snorkel and dive down to see the wreckage. Only the stern and hold 5 remains and is scattered wreckage on the bottom covered in kelp forest and anemones. Although we all hoped to find an intact bottle of whisky on bottom - the chances were slim. After a good time exploring the site, we waited for the tide to flood before navigating into Haun harbour and landing ashore. It was only then a short walk to Am Politician pub to see some of the actual whisky from the ship, along with a variety of pictures and artefacts! We all ate well and by the time our tummies were full, the tide had risen enough to bring the big boat into the pier. This made for easy boarding and we zoomed back down to our base at Castlebay. What a great day - looking forward to our next visit!
