Oil Painting Multilayer method

This painting uses the same reference image as the previous direct painting “    • alla prima: /paint directly on the ca...   ” but takes a different approach.
This is a classic multi-layered technique that involves building up a painting with several different layers. This approach gives the final piece greater depth, brightness, and detail. Here is a breakdown of the process:
0:00 First use four layers of acrylic burnt umber to prime.
0:38 Once the base is dry, use Compressed Charcoal Sticks to sketch in the composition, basic shapes and light and dark relationships.
4:55 Use acrylic burnt umber and white to add more details. The main purpose of using acrylic for the primary draft is to dry quickly and save time.
36:28 Since acrylic has a different lightness when wet and dry, I start to use white and Van dyck brown oils to deepen the portrayal after 80% of the process.
1:27:30 Once the sketch is completely dry, start to introduce color into the painting, usually using thin glazes of transparent or semi-transparent paint to gradually increase the color to make the base color show through and create a sense of depth.
Details: At this stage, finer details and textures are added. Finally, as needed, thicker paint and more opaque colors can be used to highlight specific areas and bring the painting to life.
Final touches: The final layer includes adding highlights, adjusting contrast, and making any final adjustments to ensure the painting looks coherent and complete.
