On the morning of August 18th, 2021 Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas made it's maiden call to it's new home of Cape Liberty New Jersey. After completing a successful test cruise she began her long awaited schedule of 7 night cruises on September 5th. On September 19th she returned to Cape Liberty once more for a turn around day setting off on a new sailing at 5 PM.

Located on Staten Island Fort Wadsworth provides a viewing destination to see the ships in the harbor as well as the critical moment they clear the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge by just a few feet. Originally delivered to Royal Caribbean in 2009 the ship featured telescoping funnels that were used to allow it to pass under bridges that would otherwise be impassable. This was a requirement as her normal height of 236 feet would have left her unable to pass under the Great Belt Fixed Link that stood between the ship yard where she was built and the ocean. Through the use of the funnels, squat effect, and timing the tides the ship passed under the bridge safely. Upon reaching Florida though an unusually cold winter exposed a design flaw with the funnel. The exposed pipes that could telescope down lacked the normal insulation that would be present. With the colder weather soot would stick to the pipes and then flake off raining down on the sports deck, boardwalk, and aquatheater below. To fix this the funnels were permanently fixed in the extended position and insulated. She would never be able to sail under a bridge of the common height again.

That is until 2019 when during her second dry dock she received a pair of new telescoping and collapsing funnels that flip backwards to lower the height. Unlike the Quantum class vessels that have a second generation of the telescopic design Oasis received a new method. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has a clearance of 228 feet, with the use of her new funnel and the squat effect she was able to clear the passage with 9 feet of clearance at close to high tide.
