I think it's important to understand that falls are a leading cause of death and disability in the elderly. Often people fall because they've called for help and no one has come. They want to get up and go to the bathroom or get a drink of water, or they just want to get out of bed. They've pressed the call bell that's right there next to their bed, and no one comes, no one comes to help them. So, those kinds of falls are simply caused because the staff is not responsive to the needs of the resident. Falls can also occur when residents are being transferred when staff members are present, and they don't do it properly. Sometimes you have a situation where a resident needs two people to make a move from a bed to a wheelchair, or perhaps some type of lift, and the facility for whatever reason doesn't have either enough people to make the move safely, or the people aren't trained to do the job in a competent fashion. The results of falls in the elderly are traumatic: broken bones, ribs, hips, even brain injuries regularly occur. And mostly, it should not occur in a nursing home.
