The Teófilo Rego Archive (1914-1993) — with more than 600,000 records and held by Casa da Imagem (Fundação Manuel Leão) — is the subject of an ongoing research project at the Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo entitled "Photography, Modern Architecture and the «Escola do Porto»: Interpretations on Teófilo Rego Archive" that is centered in the analysis of the emergence of Modern Architecture in Portugal and that offers one of its most comprehensive portrayals, together with a better understanding of a national culture and society at the time Portugal was under a fascist regime. Particularly, the images chosen to be the scope of this paper — a series of photographic postcards representing the city of Oporto and its architecture — were taken in response to a commission, made to the photographer in the 1960's by a private publisher, for the production of a series of postcards. Moreover, as Teófilo Rego did work directly with a generation of modern architects that are at the origin of the internationally recognized "Escola do Porto" (School of Oporto), this study will let us put into discussion the architectural and cultural qualities of the built environments represented in these photographs.
