It's time to sort out these messy colonies. There are a lot of problems:

Warehouses would be nice, since reliance on mobile warehouses, aka wagon trains, is getting silly. Also, constantly reassigning producers when the basic storehouse is full gets very old very quickly.

There's a lot of untrained (or wrongly trained) workers. Ideally, each colony should have a schoolhouse, and the basic jobs (lumberjack, carpenter, farmer, fisherman) should be done by experts. Food production is particularly important here, since farmers eat food, so their real value is based on the food they produce after the first 2 units. But this is where the inefficiency penalty starts to be crippling - education requires 2 people (teacher plus student) plus a farmer feeding them... that's 3 people out of 5 already!

So I need more statesmen and statesman-improving buildings. I am slowly working towards universities, which will let me train statesmen instead of expensively buying them. Loyalty is slowly improving, which makes it possible to do extravagant things like have 2 lumberjacks and 2 carpenters working in the same colony. At higher difficulty levels, it still helps to have satellite land-working colonies that feed the inner building-worker-type colonies.

Automated wagon trains are a very nice feature. I do not like to use them at the beginning, because they tend to make stupid decisions when wandering Indians block the roads... but that's not much of a problem any more.

I also buy some ships and indulge in some piracy. Unfortunately, my enemies don't seem to be rich enough to be worth stealing from, and Europe's low sale prices and high taxes really don't help.

Founding Fathers (can you guess my priority here?)

Thomas Jefferson: 50% more liberty bells. He pays for himself pretty quickly, and on top of that, increases the rate at which you can make colonies loyal. So get him ASAP.
Thomas Paine: Increases liberty bell production by the current tax rate. Usually a slightly worse Jefferson, but still very good.
Simon Bolivar: Probably the best Founding Father in the whole game. He increases loyalty by 20%. The way this works is that the loyalty calculation now starts at 20%, then the effect of all bells ever produced by that colony is added. So... a brand new colony starts at 20% loyalty, which means it can have one more colonist without inefficiency penalties. Then you only need another 30% to get to that vitally important 50% point. Existing colonies also jump up by 20%, which is likely to take a few of them past a breakpoint, and only 80% of the normal number of bells is needed to make another colonist loyal.
