What is the Qualification to become a Guru?
This pressing question has sparked intense discussions among devotees and spiritual seekers for decades. In this video, explore Srila Prabhupada’s teachings, historical context, and the system he put in place during his final days in Vrindavan Dham.
In the Vedic tradition, becoming a guru is not an entitlement or a matter of ambition—it is a great responsibility. A genuine guru must be a self-realised soul, completely fixed in the service of Lord Krishna and fully conversant with shastra.
Srila Prabhupada clearly taught that only a maha-bhagavata, a topmost devotee, can act as a bona fide diksha guru. This qualification is not dependent on institutional designation but on spiritual realisation. Srila Prabhupada strongly opposed the idea of appointing gurus through voting or committee decisions. Spiritual authority is not a democratic process, but requires an order from a predecessor acharya.
Srila Prabhupada emphasised a system of collective administration consisting of senior disciples who formed the Governing Body Commission to manage the institution. Srila Prabhupada introduced the Ritvik – Representative of the Acharya system for future initiations when he is no longer physically present. Rather than naming a single successor, he entrusted the movement to a structured framework, aiming to preserve the purity and unity of the Krishna Consciousness movement.
Sri Suvyakta Narasimha Dasa, Governing Body Member of Worldwide Hare Krishna Movement, explains how Srila Prabhupada's decision was deliberate, visionary, and revolutionary. This explanation is rooted in authentic teachings, letters, and institutional history, clearing common misconceptions and offering clarity to all who seek the truth about ISKCON's spiritual leadership.
