A definition and explanation of upstaging.

Upstaging is the term given to actors for ‘out shining’ or being better than someone else, especially being better than the lead character(s)

The phrase comes from original theatres being sloped downwards towards the audience, actors would walk upstage (towards the back of the stage area) to be seen.
