Israeli strikes hit Beirut as October 7 attacks are remembered | Protest outside Netanyahu's home

Commemorations are underway in Israel marking one year since Hamas launched the deadliest single day attack in Israel's history.

Hamas – designated a terrorist organisation by some countries – killed around 1,200 people, most of them Israeli, and took more than 240 hostages.

The region has faced a dramatic escalation in violence since then.
