ZJU Scientists Create World’s First Self-Healing Soft Pump for Robots

Scientists at Zhejiang University in China have created the world’s first self-healing soft pump for robots. This special pump works like a “heart” that helps soft robots move, such as swimming like a fish or driving like a small car.

Led by Professor Zou Jun, the team was inspired by spiders. Spiders use a natural hydraulic system in their legs to move and can also heal their injuries. The scientists designed a pump that can do the same. It uses electricity to push liquid through tiny parts, helping the robot move smoothly and quietly.

The most amazing part is that if the pump is damaged, it can heal itself. This is because it uses a special liquid made with tung oil. When the liquid touches air, it hardens and seals the damage.

This soft pump is also light, quiet, and doesn’t need wires, which makes it great for small, untethered robots. It can be used in underwater robots, wearable devices, and medical tools.

The research was published in Nature Communications and could change the future of soft robotics, making robots smarter, safer, and more useful in real life.
