Poem:Dil (The Heart)

Book: Bang-e-Dra 30

By

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal

This poem is named by Dil (The Heart) taken from bang-e-dara number 30. This poem has nine distiches. In first verse we can see the clear theme of the poem “Iltajaye Arini” which refers to the incident when Hazrat Musa A.S made dua to Allah Almighty “Rabbi Arini Anzur Ilaik” O my Creator Bless me with your Divine Vision, I wish to see you. [Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 143]. In first stanza Iqbal say that it is not easy for common man to endangered own life. But here are some live hearted people for them doing these risks are not more than child’s play. When on Mount Sinai (holy mount, mount Horeb, mountain of Toor, mount Moses) Hazrat Musa request to Allah that show me your glimpse even though Allah Almighty reply that you can’t endure it. When the lightning struck the mountain they get fainted but they put their lives at stake. In next stanza he said that the heart which is full of cognition is more precious than anything. And whoever makes this type of heart his moderator than the passion of affection become immortal. How after the annihilation of life due to amorousness that recreates the passion of love, in this way Iqbal beautifully illustrate about the creation of heart. The incident of Frahad that he does so difficult work even dug the mountain but he never ever dug into the ruin of the heart. His heart was deserted the power that made it known to the destination he didn’t even consider it. Iqbal Clearly gesticulates toward the actual love and said my heart is caught in the love of entity which has created this world that’s why I’m insane of my heart. The heart is abode of god that’s why the prostration given with a sincere heart is most precious than the thousand prostration that are performed by an empty heart. In the last part of the poem Iqbal explores the different condition of the heart that if the heart falls into the trap of the love it begin to feel liberated, if it considered as a plant it turns into green instead of ash cause of fall the lightning. This master piece of Allama Iqbal explores the heart conditions and whole situation of heart and journey from virtual love to Allah Almighty.
