പത്തനംതിട്ട∙ മ‍ഞ്ഞിൽ പുതഞ്ഞ ഓർമകൾ 56 വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം തിരിച്ചെത്തിയപ്പോൾ ഇലന്തൂർ ഈസ്റ്റ് ഒടാലിൽ വീട്ടിൽ നിറഞ്ഞത് സങ്കടവും സന്തോഷവും. ഹിമാചൽപ്രദേശിലെ റോത്തങ് പാസിൽ 1968ലുണ്ടായ സൈനിക വിമാനാപകടത്തിൽ പത്തനംതിട്ട ഇലന്തൂർ സ്വദേശിയും കരസേനയിൽ ക്രാഫ്റ്റ്സ്മാനുമായിരുന്ന തോമസ് ചെറിയാൻ മരിച്ചതായി ഇന്നലെയാണ് സൈന്യം കുടുംബത്തെ അറിയിച്ചത്. നീണ്ട നാളത്തെ തിരച്ചിലിനൊടുവിലാണ് മഞ്ഞിൽ പുതഞ്ഞ തോമസ് ചെറിയാന്റേത് ഉൾപ്പെടെ 4 പേരുടെ മൃതദേഹം കുളു ജില്ലയിലെ റോത്തങ് പാസിൽ മഞ്ഞുമലയിൽ കണ്ടെടുത്തത്.

നാലു സഹോദരങ്ങളാണ് തോമസ് ചെറിയാന്. സഹോദരൻ തോമസ് തോമസ് ഇലന്തൂരിൽ . മറ്റൊരു സഹോദരൻ തോമസ് വർഗീസ് | സഹോദരി മേരി. പരേതനായ മൂത്ത സഹോദരൻ തോമസ് മാത്യുവും സൈനികനായിരുന്നു. ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ തോമസ് ചെറിയാന് 78 വയസ്സ് ആകുമായിരുന്നു. തോമസ് ചെറിയാന്റെ ശരീരത്തിൽനിന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളുടെ വിവരം ലഭിച്ചത്. മഞ്ഞുമലയിൽ‍നിന്നു........ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടം കിട്ടിയ വിവരം ഇന്നലെ ആറന്മുള പൊലീസാണ് വീട്ടിൽ എത്തി സഹോദരൻ തോമസ് തോമസിനെ അറിയിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് കരസേന ആസ്ഥാനത്തുനിന്നും സന്ദേശം എത്തി. ‘‘ തിരികെ വരുമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അപകടം സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചതോടെ പ്രതീക്ഷ ഇല്ലാതായി’’– ഇളയ സഹോദരൻ തോമസ് വർഗീസ് പറഞ്ഞു.

The Indian Army has informed the family of Thomas Cherian, a native of Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, that his remains have been found in the Himalayas, 56 years after he went missing in a plane crash. Thomas Cherian, a craftsman in the Indian Army, was among four soldiers who died in the 1968 plane crash at Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh.
After an extensive search, the Army recovered the remains of the four soldiers, including Thomas Cherian, from the snow-covered mountains. The family, who had lost hope of ever finding his remains, was informed by the Army and the police. Thomas Cherian's younger brother, Thomas Varkey, expressed mixed emotions, saying the family had always hoped he would return, but now they have closure. "In 1968, an AN-12 aircraft carrying 102 soldiers and supplies went missing on February 7 while flying from Chandigarh to Leh. The plane crashed into the snow-covered mountains of Rohtang Pass in Kulu district. Although everyone on board died, only nine bodies have been recovered so far. The latest recovery includes the bodies of Thomas Cherian, Malkhan Singh, and Sepoy Narayan Singh. Another body remains unidentified. Thomas Cherian, 22, was the second of five children born to O.M. Thomas and Eliyamma of Elanthoor East Odal."
