An inscription at Ahole mentions the capture of the Maurya capital Gharapuri by the Pulakesi Chalukyas in the early seventh century. It is possible that the fort was built on the Dronagiri hill on Karanja island to protect the port of Uran, which is close to Gharapuri, the capital. The Dronagiri fort was under the control of the Yadavas of Devagiri.
