So I had this emergency light hanging around doing nothing after being removed from an installation so decided to modify it into a work light for myself as a little electrical project.

The light is a Newlec brand one, model NL5850, that uses a T5 8W/33 fluorescent tube and is rated to last for at least 3 hours.

I drilled/cut some holes in the side of the casing where there is empty internal space to install a IEC (kettle type) power input socket / connector for power. I also fitted a fuse holder with 5A fuse for the mains input to the internal charging circuitry.

I also fitted a power switch to the internal battery because normally when the power goes out emergency lighting comes on automatically. This is what they are designed to do, so it's good it does - just not for my current use case / re-purposing of the fitting.

The switch will now allow me to turn the light off when it's not plugged in to mains power, preventing it from discharging itself completely.

The final result is a tidy little self-contained, mains power charged light that lasts for hours with readily available replacement batteries and tubes / lamps.
The entire project has been done using old parts I have taken from old electronics so cost me nothing.
