For David, leading with purpose is about making an impact. “When someone dials 999 in London, on most occasions they’ll get a fire engine in six minutes,” he says. “Everything we do in my team is to make sure that happens. You don’t get a more powerful purpose.”

He talks about the challenge of meeting that responsibility, how it pushed him to draw on every reserve, and the importance of building teams with the right mix of capability and cultural insight. David also highlights why admitting you can’t be an expert in everything is not a weakness. It is what allows leaders to focus on where they can make the greatest difference.
