Kashmir has finally received the season’s first heavy snowfall after weeks of a prolonged dry spell, bringing much-needed relief to the tourism sector. Several parts of the Valley, including popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam, witnessed fresh snowfall since late evening, transforming the region into a winter wonderland.

According to the Meteorological Department, snowfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours in higher reaches, while rainfall is likely in the plains. The department has also confirmed the onset of Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, known for extreme cold and intense snowfall.

The fresh spell of snow has already led to a rise in tourist footfall, especially in Gulmarg, a major hub for skiing and snowboarding. Tour operators, hoteliers, taxi drivers, guides, and local shopkeepers say the snowfall has revived hope after months of financial stress, particularly following the Pahalgam attack earlier this year.

Authorities have issued travel advisories and stepped up snow clearance operations on major roads to ensure safety and connectivity.

As Kashmir is blanketed in snow, expectations are high that this winter season will bring economic revival along with its natural beauty.
