This presentation is based on secondary analysis of data collected from an NIH research grant. There is paucity in research, theory, and nosology to define and understand hypersexual behavior. Terminology such as sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity, compulsive sexual behavior, sexual impulsivity, and paraphilia-related disorders imply different theoretical orientations and imply different treatments. Our experience, and the extant literature, indicates that, regardless of the above conceptualizations, patients who present for treatment present with a range of social and interpersonal difficulties. The purpose of this study is to investigate how interpersonal traits may relate to compulsive sexual behavior using three scales from the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ): Alienation, Social Potency, and Social Closeness. Participants included 200 males recruited from the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area who reported engaging in sexual behavior with men and have had at least one sex partner in the last 90 days. Participants were categorized as either sexually compulsive or controls based on a SCID-type interview designed to assess the proposed DSM-V criteria for Hypersexuality. We will explore the implications of our findings for conceptualizing compulsive sexual behavior and for their implications for clinical intervention of this syndrome.
