Born as Pradeep Kumar to an auto-driver, this 25-year-old Salem native has become the first transgender to take charge as a sub-inspector of police at Choolaimedu Police Station on Monday. K Prithika Yashini is part of the batch of 111 sub-inspectors, taking charge in the police stations across the city.

As she experienced changes in her body, she left home in 2011. She continued to juggle jobs. For a time, she also worked as a warden in a ladies’ hostel, say reports.

Yashini had always wanted to join the police forces but her application was rejected by the state police department owing to lack of provision in guidelines for physical and interview for the third gender.

But thanks to the intervention of the Madras high court in 2015, she was sent to Dharmapuri in March 2016 for practical training.

On Monday, as K Prithika Yashini assumed charge as a sub-inspector of police at Choolaimedu Police Station, she became an inspiration for people.

She not only broke a glass ceiling but also broke barriers of gender bias and social stigma.
