20 years of Tzu Chi in the USA - Life, health, and love ---
16 years ago, Tzu Chi established its first overseas medical mission. The efforts have moved a great many of the patients who have sought out Tzu Chi's free clinics, persuading some to join the bodhisattva ranks. Today we will share with you three such stories, true tales of true events, of 3 people who received Tzu Chi's kindness, and were changed.
The Indonesian mother
Hello, can you come pick me up? I need to go fold the newspaper.
More than two years have passed, and nearly every day the free clinic will hear that familiar voice: Hadati's. Hadati is a recycling volunteer at the Tzu Chi's free clinic center in the US. But after a fall more than two years ago, Hadati is having trouble even walking. Ever since, when she goes to help out, her fellow volunteers have been giving her rides to and from the hospital.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Hadati:
"When I fell and hurt myself, I couldn't come. But Tzu Chi's people kept looking in on me, and after I was better, I wanted to keep coming."
Change for the better
A three year veteran of the volunteer ranks is this man from Hong Kong, Huang Jinsheng, who says the changes to his life have been quite tangible.
Tzu Chi volunteer, Huang Jinsheng:
"When I did this before, I had to force myself, especially the stuff I didn't want to do. Doing it strained me a lot, and my body showed it. Later, when I joined the ranks of the volunteers, each time I was happy to be doing it. All along, very happy. So life got peaceful, and I felt I was quite fortunate. Helping others is a really good thing. I'm very thankful to Tzu Chi."
A traditional doctor, loving giver
For 14 years, this traditional Chinese doctor has been helping patients at Tzu Chi's free clinics. A native Chinese, Huang Dongliu suffered a stroke, and now can no longer treat patients. Yet she feels she must continue to help others. This last February, Huang donated 120,000 US dollars to Tzu Chi's medical mission. This last August, she gave another 270,000 US dollars for relief for Taiwan's flood victims. Simple and frugal, Huang Dongliu lives a life of ease.
16 years of happy service
Tzu Chi-US's free clinic center was founded in Los Angeles, in 1993. Now 16 years later, it has accumulated a legacy of love and aid, for both doctors and patients, body and spirit.
