Development History and Key Specifications

The F-35 program began under the Joint Strike Fighter initiative in the early 2000s. The F-35C made its first flight in 2010 and was officially deployed in 2019. It features stealth technology, an advanced radar, and the Pratt & Whitney F135 afterburning turbofan engine.

The F-35C has a length of 51.5 feet (15.7 meters), a wingspan of 43 feet (13.1 meters), and a height of 14.7 feet (4.5 meters). It has a maximum speed of Mach 1.6 (1,200 mph) and a combat radius of 1,200 nautical miles (2,220 kilometers). The aircraft can carry a maximum takeoff weight of 70,000 pounds (31,800 kilograms) and is armed with AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, AIM-9X Sidewinders, JDAM bombs, and other advanced munitions.

The F-35 program is the most expensive military project in history, exceeding $1.7 trillion in total costs. The F-35C unit cost is approximately $117 million per aircraft. Each hour of flight costs around $33,000, and the annual maintenance cost per aircraft exceeds $6 million. The total development program has cost over $400 billion in research and production.
