When patients realize what degenerative disc disease actually is, they are often surprised because frequently, the word "disease" in their diagnosis is misleading and drives them to think it is something they've caught somewhere or a systemic disease that requires medication to be resolved.
However, degenerative disc disease is not something you catch and systemically affects your body. It is something that affects the disc of your spine, causing these to degenerate.
Discs are simply put, the cushioning between each vertebra. They allow spacing so the nerves can come out and help facilitate spinal flexibility. Since the spine is a continuous bone structure that extends from your neck to your pelvis, its main function is to allow movement, which will depend on how healthy your discs are. Discs act as shock absorbers as well, helping distribute mechanical stress along the body.
Degenerative disc disease happens when the spine loses its normal alignment. Scoliosis, injuries, or something else that might have occurred can cause the spine to lose alignment; also, the effect on the spine of gravity over time causes the spine to degenerate faster in the area of the misalignment.
The older the patient, the more likely they are to have degenerative disc disease because of the effects of gravity over time.
If the terminology "disease" was taken to heart, then every single disc of the spine would be affected the same, but that is not what happens. With degenerative disc disease, it is only one or two areas and some of the adjacent discs that are affected, not the entire spine. So, the area of the spine most affected by the misalignment will go through a more rapid degeneration, which is what we call degenerative disc disease.
The correct terminology for what happens should be a misalignment of the spine, and the degeneration that happens is only a symptom of said misalignment.
Many repetitive processes can cause spinal misalignment:
Carrying weights wrong
Sedentary lifestyles
Chronic poor posture
Incorrectly lifting objects
Incorrect sitting position
The first sign of disc deterioration is the loss of flexibility in the spine. The most common one is often the spine's low back or lumbar area. As the degeneration grows, it leads to generalized back pain or localized pain in the area of the disc deterioration. And it can extend even further and start to cause radicular issues, and the pain will radiate and extend to the neck, head, arms, and legs. It can even cause sciatica.
To help your disc disease, the first thing to do is to restore the normal alignment of the spine and allow the discs to have the flexibility to heal on their own.
As patients get older, the discs no longer have a blood supply, and it is difficult to see a regeneration of discs. A proactive approach to treatment is the most important thing to do for disc degeneration in adults.
If you have been diagnosed with this, by improving the alignment of your spine, you can improve the flexibility and motion of the spine, and you can stop the symptoms of degenerative disc disease.
Treating the cause of your disc degeneration is the most important, and that is what we focus on at the Scoliosis Reduction Center, restoring alignment to improve flexibility on the spine and allow the body to heal as it was meant to.
