Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveils Sardar Patel Statue, Major Khathing Museum in Tawang

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the Major Ralengnao 'Bob' Khathing museum in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang on October 31. Named ‘Desh ka Vallabh’ and the ‘Museum of Valour’ the inauguration took place through a virtual ceremony from Tezpur’s 4 Corps Headquarters. The Defence Minister was initially scheduled to visit Tawang but the ceremony was moved online due to adverse weather.

Meanwhile, in Tawang, senior officials and dignitaries, including Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, joined the ceremony at Tawang, while military and civil leaders attended virtually.

The ceremony coincided with Deepawali and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, honouring Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary and his efforts in unifying over 560 princely states after independence. In his speech, Singh noted the statue’s role in inspiring unity and the strength required to build a diverse nation.

Singh also paid tribute to Major Bob Khathing, known for integrating Tawang into India and establishing key security units such as the Sashastra Seema Bal and the Naga Regiment. The museum, he said, stands as a tribute to Khathing’s impact on the Northeast and the nation.

The defence minister highlighted the government’s commitment to the Northeast, emphasizing its cultural and economic development as essential to national progress. He mentioned key infrastructure projects like the Sela Tunnel and the upcoming 2,000-km Arunachal Frontier Highway, which will enhance connectivity and serve as a strategic asset for the region and country.

Singh also praised the Armed Forces for their contributions to the Northeast, from disaster relief efforts to cooperation in economic development and security.
