Pakistan is home to more than 110 million children. Over 80 million children don’t have access to a continuous basic health check. Into this gap steps Sehat Bunyad, a school-based preventive care system created by nutritionist entrepreneur Muhammad Zahid Akhtar. The programmer aims to weave healthcare into the fabric of education, ensuring that every report card contains an honest snapshot of a child’s well-being.
The need could not be clearer. Forty-five million children are already trailing in health and learning, 56 percent of adolescent girls are iron deficient, and one in five children struggles with behavioral or mental health issues. Malnutrition alone drains three percent of national GDP—about US$7.6 billion—each year through lost productivity and soaring medical costs.
Sehat Bunyad’s model is elegantly simple and rigorously data-driven. Mobile medical teams visit partner schools every quarter to measure over forty health indicators, encompassing the entire body. Results are uploaded to a secure portal that delivers plain language reports and tailored diet plans directly to parents’ phones. Academic scores are overlaid on the same dashboard, giving families and teachers a 360-degree view of growth, cognition, and attendance.
Technology amplifies reach. An AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot answers nutrition questions in real time, while cloud analytics identify clusters of stunting or obesity for targeted interventions. The programmer is also generating jobs for nutritionists, nurses, and software engineers, and it aligns squarely with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
With more than 300,000 schools across Pakistan, the runway for scale is vast. Early pilots show sharper parental awareness, earlier detection of anemia and obesity, and measurably better classroom focus.
“Sehat is not a privilege—it’s the foundation,” says Zahid. “Let’s build Pakistan on it.” If scaled nationwide, its data-driven blueprint could save billions and unlock the promise of Pakistan's youth.
