For those who find the standard M4 too demure and the Bavarian coupe's Competition Package version too hardcore, BMW has availed a selection of approved M Performance Parts that can add visual glamour and aural excitement to the standard car. Are they worth the extra outlay?

We drove the M4 with M Performance Parts (replete with various carbon-fibre addenda and a sonorous exhaust system upgrade – all fully approved by BMW) on the serpentine and picturesque Chapman's Peak Drive, outside Cape Town. If nothing else, it was a good opportunity for the fettled M4 to clear its throat and remind us why it remains one of the world’s most revered sportscars...
