Wenderholm Regional Park

Описание к видео Wenderholm Regional Park

Wenderholm regional park is about 48 km from Auckland's CBD, it lies between the Waiwera river and Puhoi river mouths, surrounded by forested headlands. Wenderholm contains one of Aucklands best examples of mainland coastal forest, it has a large sandspit and a coastal salt marsh, also known as a tidal marsh, it's a coastal ecosystem between land and open saltwater that is regularly flooded by the tides.

There is also a historical homestead named "Couldrey House", it's open to the public over weekends, at the time of my visit, entry was $5 per adult and kids free, and is open from 1pm - 4pm.

The Homestead was originally built by Robert Graham, a well know Aucklander in the 1840's, he built the homestead as a holiday house and called it Wenderholm, which means "Winter Home" in Swedish. It was a simple colonial style cottage built entirely from Kauri. The homestead has since been shifted, extended and renovated by later owners, including the Couldrey family, which the the homestead is known by today.

Wenderholm today is a very popular destination offering lots of activities which include camping, kayaking, swimming, weddings and ofcourse walking trails.

The Maungatauhoro Heritage trail forms part of the "Te Araroa" trail which stretches the whole length of New Zealand's North and South islands.

At the start of the track you are met with a big pou, this one means "The post that ties our ancestors to the land". It's a very easy walk which is suited for all ages, but also offers a section that turns to tramping grade for the more adventurous.

There is lots of on-site information about the area's history with some fun facts for kids, this walk offers a forest walk with spectacular coastal views looking high over the Whangaparaoa bay.
