He was given the nickname “Baby Jordan” in college. Not only did he bear a striking physical resemblance to Michael Jordan, he also had similar athleticism and dominated the college game as one of the best USC Trojans in Program History, with Sports Illustrated even naming his as the 1992 College Basketball Player of the year, ahead of Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning and Christian Laettner. Unfortunately for Harold Miner when he got to the NBA, he could never get close to the Michael Jordan comparisons. His game may have been too one dimensional, and there were improvements that he could have made, but less talked about is how unstable his time with the Miami Heat was in regards to playing time, add that to the fact that he had a degenerative knee issue which started deteriorating as soon as he got to the NBA, and his short career makes more sense. But Harold Miner was one of the most exciting players during his short 4 year career, as his above the rim play was top notch, leading him to winning the 1993 and 1995 Slam Dunk Contests. He showed flashes, but could never keep it consistent, however, his circumstances were less than ideal, and maybe in another situation, we’d be talking about Harold Miner in a different light. Nonetheless, he handled all of the adversity with grace and walked away from the game in a better financial position than when he started.
