The photo-novel was originally published in 1962 in the Italian weekly magazine Grand Hotel in serialised episodes. It is based on the play of the same name by Alexandre Dumas Jr. (who also wrote Lady of the Camellias, the basis for Traviata), but I should say in advance not to expect too much from the story, it is a bit (VERY) soap-opera like, but still very aesthetic and fun, and provided Franco with the perfect opportunity unwind from the pressures of singing opera but still "flex his actorial muscles" — and for us to admire his talents beyond his voice. :)

In this current version I have only used recordings made for the Italian record company Cetra between 1955 and 1958. These were made just before Corelli really 'arrived' artistically, therefore they are considered by many technically less solid, but very exciting, and a great demonstration of the intelligence, sensitivity, and deeply felt character building that distinguished Franco as a performer from the very beginning.
