No one knows better than Dr Harry Blum that staying young is all in the mind.

At the age of 100 Dr Blum has just hit New York's trendy downtown area with a one-man show of oils and pastels.

Dr Blum took turned his long-time passion for art into a full-time commitment in 1994 at age 95 when he gave up his active 71-year medical practice.

Celebrating a century of living may be an easy task according to Dr Harry Blum, a noted Brooklyn ear, nose and throat specialist.

Dr Blum gave up his successful medical practice a few years ago at the admirable age of 95, and believes that art, or rather the process of creating oils and pastels, keeps you young.

The artist, who celebrated his 100th birthday last Christmas Day was born in 1898 in the Ukraine.

He came to New York and settled in Brooklyn where he was best known as the "tonsil doctor" for more than 50 years due to the countless of medical procedures he has performed.

"We kind of knew that he would make it to 100 because of the way he lives, just the things he does. He never stands still, he's always active, he's always painting and he's just always full of life no matter what."

Blum at 100 is as keen of eye and sure of hand as people half his age.

He has 20/30 vision and is believed to be the oldest active licensed driver in Connecticut.

"You can be an artist and combine it with another career, it's very difficult to make a living as an artist, you should have another career until you get recognised and you see money coming in from the art, otherwise you'll starve as an artist."

Blum works in oils and pastels, creating still-lifes and landscapes about the people and images that have touched his life or excited his creative curiosity during most of this century.
