This video shows just a small swatch of the work done in collecting, storing and properly caring for the needs of tree seeds stored over winter. There are many tree seeds that are very straight forward... they can be stored dry for long periods of time until you are ready to sow. However, there are tree seeds that require 'cold, moist stratification' and this video shows a simple, no frills way we store these seeds and what it looks like when we do an 'inspection'...
The important take-away from this video is to remind folks that going out and collecting seeds in the fall that you want to grow isn't actually a big deal. You can have mold, drying out, excess moisture, etc., and easily get things back on track, or you can have thousands of seeds stored but only a handful actually germinate. Great! You got some trees to grow from seed! :) We often have less than 1% germination success when we first try to grow trees from seed, there is a learning curve. But you have to try to learn how to improve...
Anyway, hoping this helps folks who have stored some tree seeds and encourages folks who haven't yet to go out and collect.
