STORYLINE:
At Syria's Latakia port the twisted remains of 15 navy vessels lie half sunk in the water after Israeli airstrikes destroyed military infrastructure across the country in the wake of the Assad regime's collapse last week.

Warplanes hit what Israel said were Syrian air defense systems, military airfields, missile depots, and dozens of weapons production sites in the cities of Damascus, Homs, Tartus, Latakia, and Palmyra.

Ayman Ali, an engineer at the port, said he returned to work two days after the airstrikes to find the boat used by port officials had been hit.

Oil and diesel had also leaked out from the stricken vessels into the water.

Drone shots show that several military and civilian ships were destroyed while docking at the port.

The private security firm Ambrey said it had seen evidence that at least six Soviet-era Syrian navy missile ships were hit.

"We’ve now started organizing things, and the situation is improving," said Ahmad Yahya, a Syrian opposition fighter.

"In the near future, the port will be operational again, and even better than it was in 2010, God willing. Things are looking good," he added.
