The scapula needs to move WITH the humerus. Period. It's simple. If you reach up with the arm, your shoulder needs to be allowed to naturally follow it. This is called "scapulohumeral rhythm". You don't necessarily need to FORCE it, but just don't be trying yo squeeze your shoulderblades "down and back". That's just silly nonsense. Sometimes our yoga cues don't make any sense at all, because we don't understand the anatomy of motion.

Note - SOME compression is normal. Don't be an extremist who thinks that ALL compression is ALWAYS bad. This is just a way of reducing compression, mainly for the purpose of allowing greater freedom of motion overhead.
