Starting the year quietly, in Hakone.
Not a resolution. Just a new beginning.

A new year doesn’t always begin with noise…
sometimes, it begins with silence.

On the first day of January,
Visited Hakone Shrine,
following the Japanese tradition called Hatsumōde —
the first shrine visit of the year.

After praying, it is traditional to visit the shrine office to buy an Omikuji (fortune slip)
Omikuji predicts your luck for the year, ranging from Daikichi (Great Blessing) to Daikyo (Great Curse). If you draw a good fortune, you may keep it. If the fortune is bad, it is custom to tie the slip onto a designated rack or pine tree at the shrine, leaving the bad luck behind


It’s a moment to pause, to reflect, and to begin again.

People come here to pray for health, happiness, success, and safety.

No rush.
No noise.
Just quiet prayers… and new beginnings.

Before entering the shrine, I performed temizu —
the traditional ritual cleansing.

Hakone is special.
The water here is naturally warm and sulphur-rich,
flowing from deep within the earth, shaped by volcanic activity.

The stone basin, engraved with ancient Japanese characters,
symbolizes purification and calm of the heart.

The warm, mineral-rich water feels grounding —
believed to relax the body, heal the skin,
and release fatigue and negative energy.

As I washed my hands,
I let go of the old year
and stepped forward with a clean mind and a quiet heart.
