Learn how to make a homemade baking powder recipe to use if you run out of baking powder in the middle of a recipe, or if your baking powder is expired. Baking powder is a leavening agent used in baking to help provide texture and lift to baked goods. When baking powder is exposed to moisture in a recipe, like water or milk, the baking powder will react to the liquid by creating bubbles and this is the baking powder activating. There are two types of baking powders; single acting baking powder and double acting baking powder. Single acting baking powder reacts to liquids and needs to be baked quickly to avoid losing the aerations. Double-acting baking powder will usually contain a second acid, like sodium aluminum sulfate and calcium acid phosphate. This homemade baking powder recipe is not double acting, so make sure to get the baked good into the oven quickly. If you are not using this homemade baking powder recipe immediately, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch to this recipe which will help absorb any moisture and extend the shelf life.

Directions
Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. Stir together and use a funnel or a piece of paper to easily transfer the mixture to a sealed container. If you are using this baking powder at a later date, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch to the mixture. The cornstarch will help absorb any moisture and extend the shelf life. If you do not have cream of tartar, check below for other baking powder substitutes.

Ingredients
(Makes 1 tablespoon of Baking Powder)
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp cornstarch (if not using immediately)

Other Baking Powder Substitutes:
(For every 1 teaspoon of baking powder)

Buttermilk & Baking Soda
¼ teaspoon baking soda with the dry ingredients
½ cup buttermilk with the wet ingredients.
Reduce the other liquids in the recipe to accommodate the extra ½ cup. (Not a great option for recipes that don't call for a lot of liquid)

Plain Yogurt + Baking Soda
¼ teaspoon baking soda with the dry ingredients
½ cup plain yogurt with the wet ingredients
Reduce the other liquids in the recipe to accommodate the extra ½ cup. (Not a great option for recipes that don't call for a lot of liquid)

Lemon Juice + Baking Soda
¼ teaspoon baking soda with the dry ingredients
½ teaspoon fresh lemon juice with the wet ingredients
(Just note, that lemon juice has a strong flavor, so use this recipe if a recipe calls for a small amount of baking powder or if you want or don't mind a lemon flavor in the baked good.)

Vinegar + Baking Soda
½ teaspoon vinegar
¼ teaspoon baking soda
(White vinegar has a neutral flavor which will probably be undetected in a baked good.)
