Update from Sundays derailment and trapped loco situation with 70017 & 50015 + more footage from before & during the incident at the fantastic K&WVR diesel gala .

Class 50 50021 ‘Rodney’ derailed just after 14.30pm due to track spread after rails on old sleepers gave way as it traversed up the headshunt siding.

Also trapped further up on the headshunt after the incident was Freightliner Class 70 ‘70017’ which was due back to the Leeds Freightliner depot on Sunday night.

A group of volunteers from KVWR plus some expertise from Network Rail employees set to work to repair the track with brace bars, which was now a few inches too wide in some parts, in order to release the trapped locos.

The incident knocked out timetable plans as both the Class 50 and Class 70 were due to haul further trains that afternoon but both were trapped in the siding behind the splayed trackwork. As you can see from the footage the inner chairs have sheered due to damage from the wheel flanges of the Class 50 slipping down between the rails. It appears old tired sleepers failed to hold the chairs in place (perhaps partially due to the hot weather) causing track spread with the weight of the Class 50 traversing above.

A repair was fashioned over a number of hours which went on during Sunday afternoon and evening but was it enough to get the Class 70 back to Leeds on time? Find out towards the end of the video!

Congratulations to the volunteers of K&WVR for putting on putting on an amazing diesel gala and to those working on the repairs for their efforts and for braving some serious downpours (while we were in the pub!)
