Professor Fate... Or Is It Jack Lemmon?

Sometimes when I watch The Great Race, as I have done many, many times, I see Tony Curtis in the role of The Wonderful Leslie and Natalie Wood as the virginal and inquisitive Maggie DuBois. But, who is that dastardly man dressed all in black with the curly moustache? Why, that's Jack Lemmon, I suddenly realize. Sometimes an actor can become so hidden within a role that the character becomes an actual persona completely separate from its creator. Rooster Cogburn, Jim Rockford, Richard Kimble, Illya Kuryakin... oh, I could go on and on but back to Professor Fate, shall we? I just love the guy. I had always hoped that Mr. Lemmon would got on to do a series of films - Professor Fate - Away to the Moon or Professor Fate - Journey to Atlantis . Maybe even Professor Fate and the Vampires. Sadly, he only ever appears in The Great Race. Every time that I watch it, I always hope that there will be new scenes that were thought to be lost in the Warner Bros. archives suddenly re-edited into the film. But no, I have finally given up hope that that wish will ever come true.
So, this is my short tribute to the man, Jack Lemmon or Professor Fate - choose whichever one you like. Just grab some popcorn and a big soda pop and enjoy the video.
