Commonwealth Games 2026: Australia's Victoria state pulls out as host due to budget blowouts

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in limbo, after the Australian state of Victoria announced it is pulling out of hosting the event due to budget blowouts. State premier Daniel Andrews said he had no choice, as the projected cost for the Games had tripled. Australia's Commonwealth Games chief slammed the decision, saying it risks Victoria's standing as a sporting hub. There are concerns that the Games could now be cancelled. The Commonwealth Games Federation has said it is committed to finding another host. The Games have only ever been cancelled during World War II.
