For nearly 20 years, a small spaceplane called Dream Chaser has been sitting in the shadows. It was made by a company named Sierra Space and was first shown in 2004. It looks like a mini version of NASA's old space shuttle. But unlike other spacecraft, it has never flown to space. The problem? It has never had a working rocket to launch it.
Even though Dream Chaser is fully built and tested, its rocket partner, called Vulcan Centaur, is not yet ready. And without a rocket, it cannot fly. Meanwhile, other rockets, like SpaceX's Falcon 9, are launching almost every week. Dream Chaser, with its wide body and wings, simply does not fit inside Falcon 9's rocket cover.
But that could soon change. In January, SpaceX was seen testing a taller rocket cover for its Falcon Heavy rocket. This redesigned cover might finally be large enough to fit Dream Chaser's wide body and wings—possibly solving its launch problem after all these years. If this works, it could finally help Dream Chaser launch after waiting nearly two decades.
Dream Chaser is important for the future of space travel. NASA wants different spacecraft for its missions, not just one. Right now, the agency relies heavily on SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft. Dream Chaser offers another option. It is smaller, can land on regular runways like an airplane, and can return cargo faster than other spacecraft that land in the ocean or remote areas.
Sierra Space has designed Dream Chaser to carry both pressurized and unpressurized cargo. It can take about 5,500 kilograms to the International Space Station. This is close to what Dragon can carry and better than many older spacecraft. By attaching an extra module called Shooting Star, the inside space for cargo increases four times more than Dragon's.
One of Dream Chaser's big advantages is that it uses regular airport runways for landing. That means teams can get to the cargo faster and easier. It also uses non-toxic fuel, which makes it safer for both people and the environment.
