The mile run (1,760 yards or exactly 1,609.344 metres) is a middle-distance foot race. The history of the mile run event began in England, where it was used as a distance for gambling races. It is the only recognised imperial distance event by World Athletics/IAAF who use the metric system.

The mile holds an almost mythic aura in athletics and is a popular race event even though it is not an Olympic recognised track and field discipline. especially the popular race to see who would be first to break the 4 min mile.
