হিন্দু ধর্মীয় ব্যাখ্যা অনুযায়ী দ্বাপর যুগে ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ ধরাধামে আবির্ভূত হন। একদিন শ্রীকৃষ্ণ ভাবলেন শখাদের ভালবাসা তার প্রতি কতটুকু তা বোঝার জন্য তিনি নিজেই অন্তর্ধান হন। তখন শ্রী কৃষ্ণকে না পেয়ে গোপ-শখারা উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে মা যশোদা নিকট গেলে তিনি- মহামায়ার সন্তুষ্টি করতে উপদেশ দেন। গোপ শখরা সেই ভাবে হেমন্তকালে দেবী মহাময়ার পূজা করেন, তখন দেখা যায় দেবীর কোলে শ্রীকৃষ্ণ শিশু রূপে রয়েছেন। এই সময় থেকে দেবী কাত্যায়নী নামে পূজিত হয়ে আসছে। দূর্গা পূজার ১ মাস পরে দেবী দূগা প্রতিমার আদলে দেবী কাত্যায়নী প্রতিমা তৈরী করে I বাংলাদেশের মাগুরা জেলায় ব্যাপক আয়োজনের মধ্য দিয়ে কাত্যায়নী পূজা হয়ে আসছে। মাগুরা শহরতলীর পারনান্দুয়ালীর ধর্নাঢ্য ব্যবসায়ী সতীশ চন্দ্র মাঝি প্রথমে ১৯৪৭ সালের থেকে ব্যাপক আয়োজনে তার বাড়িতে এ পূজার আয়োজন করেন, পরে মাগুরা জেলায় ব্যাপকতা লাভ করে।

Although, Durga Puja is the greatest religious festival among the Bengali- speaking people of the Hindu community, Magura district is an exception where with the passage of time ‘Katyani Puja’ has become the main religious festival. This puja is celebrated every year one month after the Durga Puja. It was Shatish Chandra Mazi – a rich person of parnanduali village in Magura Sadar Upazila – who first observed this Katyani Puja started 1947. Since then this Puja started to become popular among the Hindu community and now it is being celebrated with much enthusiasm and festivity for about 15 years. Idols of Katyani Puja are similar to that of Durga Puja. Every year, thousands of enthusiastic people even from abroad assemble in Magura to celebrate the katayani Puja.
