The hormonal contraceptive Depo-Provera, sometimes referred to as the Depo shot or Depo injection, includes the hormone progestin. Depo-Provera is a reliable birth control method, however, it could have some negative side effects. It's crucial to keep in mind that different people may suffer different side effects, and not everyone will.

Changes in monthly bleeding are Depo-Provera's most frequent adverse effect. Initial bleeding may be unpredictable or irregular for some women, while periods may be lighter or larger for others. Menstrual cycles may completely halt in some situations. Some people on Depo-Provera might put on weight.

Although the precise cause of this is unclear, it is thought to be related to increased hunger and fluid retention. Depo-Provera may cause mood swings, sadness, or mood changes as side effects. Some women may become agitated, anxious, or have less sexual desire. Depo-Provera may cause headaches or migraines, but these side effects are typically moderate and transient.
