🏛️ Greek History of Taxila

1. Background: Taxila, located near present-day Islamabad in Pakistan, was an ancient city that became a major center of learning and culture in South Asia. It lay at the crossroads of Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East, making it a key meeting point of civilizations — including the Greeks after Alexander the Great’s invasion.


⚔️ Arrival of the Greeks (4th century BCE)

In 326 BCE, Alexander the Great invaded the northwestern regions of the Indian subcontinent.

When he reached the area of Taxila (Takṣaśilā), the local ruler King Ambhi (Omphis) welcomed him peacefully.

Alexander’s army stayed in Taxila for some time, using it as a base for campaigns against nearby rulers like King Porus (of the Battle of the Hydaspes, near River Jhelum).
