The International Leopard Day celebration, themed "Protect the Elusive," was held at the Conference Hall of the Department of Education, Mizoram University, on 5th August, 2024. The program was organized by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with the Society for the Preservation of Endangered Carnivores and Their International Ecological Study (S.P.E.C.I.E.S.) and Riahrun Tours.
The event was honored by the presence of Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati and the Vice Chancellor of MZU, Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka; the Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Prof. G. Gurusubramanian; the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Shri.Lal Ram Thanga; and the Head of Department (HoD) of Zoology, MZU, Prof. H. T. Lalremsanga.

Prof. Dibakar delivered an address, highlighting the devastating consequences of unchecked development on the world's precious wildlife. He lamented that the relentless pursuit of progress has pushed the clouded leopard and countless other species to the brink of extinction. With a sense of urgency, he emphasized that developing countries must reassess their priorities and place wildlife conservation at the forefront of their agendas.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati reminded the audience that the Mizoram was blessed with incredible natural heritage and that it was the responsibility of the people of the Mizoram to protect it for future generations.

The governor praised the clouded leopard as a majestic and elusive species, symbolizing the region's pristine wilderness and biodiversity.

Highlighting Mizoram's progress in wildlife conservation, he emphasized the need for continued efforts, including expanding protected areas, research, community involvement, education, and awareness. He thanked unsung heroes of conservation and stressed the importance of protecting wildlife for a healthier world, encouraging collaboration to preserve the natural world.
The Governor also distributed prizes to the winners of an online slogan writing competition premised on the theme “Conservation of Clouded Leopards in Mizoram.”.

The winning individuals are:
1st: Joseph Lalchhanchhuaha,
2nd: Mesak B. Laltlanchhuaha and
3rd: H. Zothanpuia.
