"In Okinawa they used to have an Agiya crew in Yaeyama but that was disbanded around five years ago. We're the only ones left now."

"We have four boats and they are crewed by about 25 people��23 to be precise."

"We can't dive in the way that diving instructors say that you should because we couldn't make a living if we did. So we dive in our own way and do our best to avoid accidents."

LEAD IN:
Surrounded by coral reefs in the clear waters of the East China Sea, Irabu Jima is part of the Miyako Island group, in Japan's Okinawa prefecture.
The island is home to a form of drive fishing known locally as Agiya.
Once widely practiced in the region, the tradition has gradually faded and now Irabu Jima possesses the only surviving drive fishing union in the region.
STORY LINE
In the late afternoon the mother ship of the Sarahama Agiya Union returns to port.
The catch is unloaded and the fish separated according to size. They are then boxed, weighed and prepared for immediate distribution.
Masao says that his crew is the only one left now.
