However, in spite of its best efforts, in 2018 the company struggled due to intense mar- ket competition. Aircel's reputation had also been marred by allegations of money laundering against its parent company.

They became bankrupt due to the disruption in telecom market caused by Jio. Also, they couldn't enter into spectrum sharing deals with other operators due to the Aircel-Maxis case. It is believed that the then telecom minister forced Aircel founder to give majority shares to Maxis.
