New te reo Māori videos out ever Sunday at 12pm (NZT).

It has been more than a century since the sound of te reo Māori echoed through the famous Waitomo Caves.

Huti Tinorau and her husband Tāne Tinorau led the first tours through in 1889. Huti spoke Māori only while Tāne understood Māori and English.

Huti led tours in te reo Māori while Tāne led bi-lingual tours as the caves’ popularity among visitors soared thanks to the glittering glowworms.

But descendants of Huti and Tāne have rekindled the reo tours for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, and they will become a permanent part of the tourist destination’s offering.
