World record on 9/28/19 [PS4] - x965 on Knightmare.

First time scoring 4 million. Wow.

This was a long climb so thanks to everyone who cheered me on along the way. I first broke 3 million points in October 2015 so 4 million points was four years in the making. Shoutouts to MageZuficA who was the first to break 3 million and OG_Pim aka Pim_1919 who I met on the leaderboards around 2.3 million and went back and forth with as we climbed to 3 million. Also big thanks to Jolly_Father90 and ODB_33000 who are both amazing players and were generous in sharing their strategies with me as we all pushed passed 3.5 million. In 2019 I met Leonardo_0028 and that kid is wicked talented so watching him helped me refine my tactics and make the final push for 4 million. I wouldn’t have made it without the community so I feel like this is as much a community achievement as it is a personal one.

And of course thanks to Rocksteady Studios who gave us three stellar Arkham games and encouraged us all to Be the Batman. I did my best.

Azrael’s Atonement is the challenge I’m asked most about so I put together a strategy guide to help others on their climb. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments.

In general, the highest scoring strategy on Azrael's Atonement is to critical strike as fast as possible, avoid counters, use projectiles on charging enemies, destroy the shield and shock baton, and of course don’t screw up. Depending on which character you’re using that changes some but that’s the gist. To score a critical strike you must press the strike button after the previous strike makes contact. If you press strike beforehand you’ll only score a strike. In the new speed game you gain speed as you successfully chain together critical strikes until you reach top speed (there are 3 levels of speed in total: you start at level 1, at x20 with no mistakes you increase to level 2, and at x40 with no mistakes you increase to level 3). If you make a mistake and press strike before the previous strike lands you’re penalized and your speed is decreased a level (you can build it back up with critical strikes). So the speed game is to time your strike as close as you can to the moment of impact without pressing the button too early and being penalized.

The second key feature of the speed game is there are two ways to target an enemy in BAK: one by using the LS to aim at a specific enemy; and two by not using the LS to aim at a specific enemy and just pressing the strike button. The major difference between aiming and not aiming (which I’ll call auto-aiming) is the game pulls from two different animation pools when selecting a strike. On average, the auto-aiming animations are shorter which allows you to work in tighter quarters and still stay ahead of incoming attacks and avoid countering (which scores less and takes longer). The drawback to auto-aiming is it has a limited range, so if no enemies are nearby you’ll just punch air and drop combo. You’ll get a feel for how auto-aiming works the more you use it but the game doesn’t just select the nearest enemy; instead the game selects the enemy that’s highest in the attack queue. So if there’s an enemy standing right in front of you and there’s an enemy behind you that’s starting to attack the game will auto-aim at the enemy behind you even if they’re farther away. While using auto-aim is on average the fastest play, it’s not always the best play (maybe auto-aim will turn you around and try to strike an enemy when there’s not enough time), so the idea is to shape the board with aimed attacks and put yourself in positions to use auto-aim as much as possible. On Azrael’s Atonement, the best place to pack enemies close together (which allows you to use auto-aim and minimizes the travel distance between enemies) is along the walls. I stay along the left wall because I like how the camera behaves there but other walls work too. Since specialized enemies spawn in every 30 seconds you can glance at your combo score when they do to track your pace/progress. Top players can score around x150 per 30s for comparison.

That’s the bulk of the strategy. From there it’s refining how you engage the specialized enemies like ninjas, medics, brutes, etc. I added some tricks to the end of the run to see if I could make it to x1000 and then 4 million but you can put up huge scores without the ice punches or multiground takedowns so don’t get hung up on the flashy moves. If you want to increase your score, work to increase your pace by improving your timing and board positioning since that’s where the majority of gains will come from. I recommend using regular takedowns on the brutes since they're the most straightforward but if you're confident with the special batclaw slam there isn't much difference in points.

Well, that’s it (or most of it at least). If you’re still reading this far down you must want to climb some leaderboards so good luck!
