Liptovský Mikuláš in the Liptov region near the Low Tatra and Tatra mountains. The town is renowned as a town of guilds and culture.
The legendary Slovak "Robin Hood" Juraj Jánošík was sentenced and executed here in 1713 by being hung by the ribcage on a hook.
Liptovský Mikuláš played an important role for Slovaks in the 19th century during the period of magyarization. It was one of the centres of Slovak national movement. The first Slovak theater was founded there in 1830 called "The theater of G. F. Belopotocký".
St. Nicolaus Church is the town's oldest monument and the largest early-Gothic building in the Liptov region.
Within 30 km there are hiking paths; cycling tracks; Jasná, the largest ski resort in Slovakia with about 70 km of piste; cross-country skiing; 3 hot springs; the water reservoir Liptovská Mara; 4 caves; folk architecture; Archaeological Museum Havránok; Vlkolínec settlement (UNESCO); and more.
