IEAA Excellence Awards 2024 - Distinguished Contribution - Dr Steve Nerlich

Steve Nerlich, PhD, has significantly advanced international education through his leadership, research, and advocacy. As Director of the International Research and Analysis Unit at the Australian Government Department of Education, he oversees the production of crucial data on international students, enhancing policy and strategic planning. Steve has developed interactive data tools and introduced a 'new student' metric, providing deeper insights into student trends. Steve actively supports quantitative and qualitative research, such as the ELICOS market survey and International Student Barometer. His efforts during COVID-19, including timely data updates and stakeholder meetings, were pivotal. Steve’s work, and extensive engagement (including presentations at major conferences and participation in the IEAA Data Committee), supports data-driven decision-making and strategy formulation across the sector.
